Another year on and the Ipswich and Felixstowe boys are at it again, although this time we've moved an extra 45 mins up the coast to Bacton in Norfolk.
Just 15 miles away in Martham, The Kings Arms was awaiting us, so in 2 car loads we all set off and arrived just after 3pm. As we pulled into the carpark we were greeted by the Landlord, which I thought was a nice personal touch. But, as we were soon to find out, he was only hanging around outside because the pub was in darkness, barr a few candles, due to a power cut. This news was obviously to the dismay of all the Norwich boys who had turned up to watch their beloved against Aston Villa, but on the other hand this news was too the general amusement of Mr. Day!!
The pub is situated in a nice little picturesque village with the local pond almost bang outside the front door. Martham itself is in the heart of the Broads so the pub offers a nice trade during the summer and plenty of ducks to feed!
Inside the pub we were greeted with a very cosey atmosphere. Due to the powercut there were candles all along the bar and on the tables. If I hadn't have turned up with 7 other gents it could have almost been regarded as romantic! The lovely open fire, which was burning nicely when we arrived, was a very welcome sight on this rather dank grey day. Lewis couldn't resist a little pose by it.
The pub was split into 3 rooms with a restaurant, a dining bar area and a general public bar. We sat in the dining bar area and felt at home straight away. The Landlady was very friendly and chatty, and so to the locals. It provided a very strong communal feel to the place which was very much appreciated by ourselves. I did poke my head round the back to take a look at the garden, but due to the time of year, and weather, there wasn't much to report. It certainly looked a good size and I can well imagine that during the summer it is very well used.
On tap there was Ghostship, Bitter and Broadside. Apart from the younger gents in the group who tucked into the coke, I believe Ghostship was the winner on the day, unlike Norwich and Ipswich who for the record both lost 3-2!
