No.22 - The Bell Inn, Walberswick, Suffolk

Sunday 14th February, 2010

The Bell Inn is a very traditional looking Adnams pub, situated only a few hundred yards down the road from The Anchor. It would certainly have been rude not to have visited both pubs in one visit! After our stroll around the sandy coastline of Walberswick, the 3 of us were ready for a bit of warmth, as well as another pint !

The Bell was built at the beginning of the 1400's which makes it now around 600 years old, which when you actually think about that, is incredible really! The history and the people that place must have seen is amazing. The building itself is very close to the beach and overlooks the harbour of Walberswick, which I would imagine on a warm sunny day must be lovely to sit outside and watch the world sail in and out of the harbour.
After squeezing the pushchair through the main door into the pub, we were immediately hit with the warmth. There, in the main bar area, was a fantastic, open, roaring fire. The smell was beautiful. Again we had missed the main rush so any potential seating issues were non existent, in fact I counted only 14 people when we arrived, and there were even fewer by the time we left an hour later.

As with The Anchor, Oyster was the seasonal Beer on offer, so it was another pint for me with Clare now taking over the driving duties. I know it's fresh in the mind, but Oyster must be one of my favourite seasonal Adnams Ales. It's just so very smooth and has a lovely warm taste which unfortunately(!) means I could probably just go on drinking and drinking it. For Florence, well she had one of her all time favourites, water!

The traditional oak furniture in the pub fitted the scene perfectly. With the lovely fire on the go, it actually felt like we were sitting in someones front room. Like the Anchor, there is a smashing back garden area which again is positioned perfectly for looking out to sea and daydreaming. Because the pub is so ancient the design means there are several small rooms and snug areas to sit in and get cosy. One of the main rooms has now been turned into a nice looking restaurant which seems to fit in seamlessly and looks like it's been there for years and years.
We supped up and hit the road at about 4pm. Someone was fast approaching their dinner time so it was important to get them
home and sorted out. It had been another splendid Adnams afternoon out with the family and the Blog just goes on from strength to strength.

Excellent - I'm glad I found your blog, I'm doing exactly the same as you are! We ticked off another four Adnams pubs this weekend, the Five Bells in Wrentham, King's Head in Laxfield, Wherry Inn in Geldeston and the Plough Inn, Wangford. I think that puts us a couple behind you with about 20 down now.

We did the brewery tour on Sunday and discovered that Adnams are no longer producing their pub guide, which makes this epic pub crawl a little more difficult.

Anyway good luck with your odyssey, glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's do-able!
