No.35 - The Harbour Inn, Southwold, Suffolk

Sunday 5th December, 2010
At last! After visiting Southwold for a number of years now, I finally managed to pick a day where the weather was kind - although freezing cold - to make the 20 minute walk down to the Harbour to visit the Adnams establishment tucked away amongst all the fishing boats and sailing shops.
Staying in Southwold for our annual December weekend, during which we'd seen the official Christmas lights switch on, Clare, Florence, Mum, Tone, Sister Loops, Andrew and Karen, joined myself for the stroll down to the Harbour Inn.
The pub on arrival is nothing overly special to look at although it does have a certain Adnams look to it. Outstide the main front entrance is an old cannon gaurding the place which is rumoured to have seen some action during the Battle of Sole Bay!
As you enter the pub, you are faced with a choice of which bar you wish to spend the afternoon or evening in. There is an upper bar which is for adults only and offers just the best views of Southwold. From this bar you can look all the way back across the marshlands to the town and Lighthouse. The other bar available is the one into which we ventured - obviously this one was child freindly but to be honest it wasn't a great deal different to the adult bar, apart from the serving hatch which is a genius idea - as Tony proved when getting the first round in ! Both bars were all dark wood panelled and had their own fire burning which provided a very warm and relaxing feel. Another piece of very good news to great us was that Yuletide was available on tap, which all the men duly went for. The ladies amongst us all went for a homemade mulled wine. The Yuletide went down a treat and a 2nd pint was not long behind. Also available was Broadside, Old, Explorer and Spindrift, so a nice variety you'll agree.
During our lunchtime visit it was obviously going to be tough not to take in some lunch, so without too much deliberation, food was ordered, and what a good decision it was. I think all of us who had some form of fish dish would agree it was one of the best we'd had. The cod and chips which Clare and Tony had was perfect, and I'm sure if Flo could offer her thoughts about her fish pie I'm sure she would say the same.

My final two pictures, just because they offered such cozy warmness on a freezing cold day, are of the 2 fireplaces. Hmmm nice !
