No.14 - The Mill Inn, Aldeburgh, Ipswich

Sunday 30th August, 2009
Aldeburgh re-visited !
After our last trip to Aldeburgh, 2 Adnams pubs remained to complete the set, so Clare, Florence, my mum and Tony set out to finish the job. The first stop was The Mill Inn - via The Cross Keys, The White Hart, a beer fest and a bag of chips !

On arrival, the 16th Century building looked stunning in the summer sun, with some well kept hanging baskets decorating the outside, and plenty of drinking tables across the road, literally on the sea front. As you can see, Tone was very keen to get in and buy the beers. The building was once the haunt of many a smuggler, but they seem to have all disappeared now, that was until we went in to buy our drinks! At £6.30 for 2 pints, something doesn't seem right! Luckily, as it was a lovely sunny day, the very small bar was quiet and easy to get served at. I could imagine on a wet and wild winter's evening, the bar must get rammed. It is literally a stumble through the door.

Unfortunately for such a lovely looking pub, the 'front of house' left a little to be desired. Young Florence was also now needing a little refreshment, so in I went armed with a cold bottle of milk. "Sorry, we've turned our hot water off now" was the response I got when asking for some to warm the milk. Eh ?? Bizarre. Sorry, but that was a bit rubbish.

On tap we had Broadside, Bitter and Explorer with both myself and Tone enjoying a pint of the latter. Mum and Clare supped on a coffee purchased from the tea hut on the green which also very kindly provided us with a lovely big jug of hot water for Flo Bag's milk. Clare had earlier sampled a couple of halves at The White Hart Beer fest, particularly enjoying her half of South Devon 'Ginger Tosser'. It was time to move on, but there was just time for my Lord Nelson impression - minus the patch!
