No.8 - The Greyhound, Ipswich, Suffolk

Friday 31st July, 2009
NCT boys night out at the dogs! Well kind of.
A smashing way to start the weekend off. The Greyhound in Ipswich is situated about 5 miles from where I live, over the other side of town just behind the beautiful Christchurch Park, so it was a nice easy venue to cross off the list. I met up with 4 of the other NCT dads at 7.30ish to have a 'new' dad catch up, but of course to also sample some Adnams Bitter.
The Greyhound on first impressions doesn't offer much, but it's one of those Adnams pubs that you need to venture into to realise it's full value as a great 'local' for those that live nearby.
On tap we were offered The Bitter, Broadside, Regatta and Explorer, with Gunhill and Lighthouse available from the bottle. A very good selection, and with about 6 people behind the bar we didn't need long to be served.

After the disturbing news during the week that 52 pubs a week were going out of business, you have to ask yourself can these pubs/breweries do any more to encourage beer drinkers to return? At £3.20 a pint it is quite obvious why people are staying at home to drink beer, like Adnams, when supermarkets are knocking out 2 bottles of Carbon Neutral for just £3.00 !! Still, on this particular evening it didn't stop Stevie B, Henry, Dom, Ben and myself spending our little fair share to keep this pub open! A few pints each of the Regatta went down a treat.

Out the back of the Greyhound was a great little courtyard which we made the most of as it was quite a nice evening - despite the bad summer we've been having so far this year. It's a very social area which got more and more lively as the evening drew on. We all eventually left at about 9.00pm for a curry, very nicely lubricated.
Unfortunately there was no sign of any local Greyhounds but just before we left, this little fella rocked up on his motorcycle for his Friday night Adnams fix !!
