No.9 - The Hospital Arms, Colchester, Essex

Saturday 8th August, 2009
The Stags in Ward 9!

My brother Paul is getting married next weekend so imagine my disappointment when he suggested that we pop into the Hospital Arms, Colchester for a few beers to celebrate.
Paul, Tony, Jerry, Andrew, David and myself all went along to help the Stag celebrate.
The pub is an old traditional Ale House which has been in the town for a few hundred years. The nickname of 'Ward 9' derives itself from the fact that the pub is directly opposite Essex County Hospital, which until the new current hospital was built, was the main one in Colchester. Many a surgeon could be found in there calming their nerves before a major op!! - apparently !!
During the 80's the pub changed it's name to the 'Tap & Spile', but thankfully returned to its current name back in the 90's.
Tonight there was a good selection of beer on. Broadside, Regatta, Explorer, Bitter and Spindrift. The majority of the party tucked into Broadside but myself and Tony indulged in a couple of Explorer followed by some Regatta. Well it is summer time.
The Stags !!

All 6 of us had a great evening in the pub, in fact we spent all night sitting outside in the lovely courtyard garden enjoying the late summer sun. One downside with sitting in the courtyard though is that the pub is next door to an Indian restaurant, which if you like Indian food can be a problem, as the wafts coming over the fence can leave you feeling rather peckish!
We left the pub to head on home at about 9.30pm but as we left we were greeted with a rather strange site. I know some pubs can get busy and seating can be limited, but to bring your own sofa to sit on ?????
