No.25 - The Butt and Oyster, Chelmondiston, Suffolk

Sunday 13th June, 2010

After sitting through the dour England match the previous night, it was decided that we needed to get the disappointment out of our system by making a visit to one of Adnams newly acquired properties, The Butt and Oyster. It sure did the trick. Luckily for us, this pub is only 15 mins away so we are certain that another visit will be made.
We arrived at about 2pm, just as the sun was burning through the grey clouds, to be greeted by a beautiful scene. The B&O is situated right on the banks of the River Orwell and is a hive of activity, with many people actually arriving by boat.
The pub is decorated outside with plenty of pot plants, shrubs, and
with at least 20 tables outside, all of them full, giving the pub a real rustic feel. It was a pleasure to see on this summers day.

Pin Mill, which is the small village in which the pub lives, was once a smugglers haven, and the name of the pub commemorates the great oyster fisheries which was once a major export from the River Orwell. The pub dates back to the 17th century and over the years has been extended, once during the 19th century, and a more recent expansion during the 20th.
While I parked up the car back in the Pay and display, Clare and Florence somehow managed to get a table outside in the sun.
Whether you sit outside, or in, you get a great view of the river and all that go's on out there. Sitting there in the sunshine was like being away on holiday!
The inside of the pub is also very well kept and again, I imagine, is comfortable whether you are sitting in during the summer or on a cold winters afternoon. The large Bay windows overlooking the river give the bar area a lovely open, spacious feel and plenty of scope to watch the world sail by. The bar is racked with kegs of ale with a good choice of The Bitter, Broadside, Explorer and Lighthouse all available. We both decided on a drop of Explorer, which was a great choice on this hot day!

Once we were done with lunch we reluctantly decided to make tracks home, but first we managed a little lap of the estuary area and a short walk along the rivers edge. One thing which both myself and Clare decided on was that we need to buy Florence some Wellington Boots for our next visit !
